Are Meta tags still relevant to big search engines? But why are they still using it?

The debate on the relevance of meta tags to the search engines is that major search engines don't really take much weight on meta tags like <meta name="keywords" content="401k, Business,Financial Information,Investing,Investor,Market News,Stock...> But why are are sites like Yahoo, MSN, Myspace and Youtube still using them on their site!!!!???

Re: Are Meta tags still relevant to big search engines? But why are they still using it?

My point of view is very simple - meta is not something of crucial importance. But whenever I have the chance to use proper keywords in meta - I do that. I think that good meta can sometimes be a nice factor to give extra boost.

P.S. And don't forget that Google still displays the 'decsription' in its results and bolds the keywords that fit to the search query. That is why I think in todays very competitive market every chance to get extra boost cannot be missed. And meta can be this extra boost by no doubt.

P.P.S. Some tinier search engines still use meta. Of course, they can't give the loads of traffic like Google and Yahoo. But I am never against extra 10-20 people per month if they come from small search engine, because there are no 'extra clients' in the business.

I totally agree with you that it doesn't hurt to keep using meta description as other smaller search engines can bring in residual traffic.

look even the Senior Manager of Search at Yahoo (jon glick) thinks we "...must consider some of the old as well as the new optimization tools, for both Google and Yahoo, when optimizing your web pages for maximum search query exposure and high page rank. "

p.s. talking about that, we still have to put our meta's on this newly launched site at profitimo.com!

Hi there,
Well I feel use of Meta keywords ia a mere wastage of your time and effort. Meta Description are pretty useful...I agree with u on this particular note. Use of Meta keyword tags hurts your website in the sense you give up/show up your competitors list of your important keywords. So, what's the use? Google no longer cares for Meta keywords but Yahoo does..I donno why?? Also, we all give much priority to Google than any other search engines in the webworld. When we think about something,First thing pops up in our mind "Does Google take cares of this XYZ while determining ranking?". So, I think its justified to use Meta Description but not Meta Keywords..Thanks

Re: Are Meta tags still relevant to big search engines? But why are they still using it?

IMO Meta Description still has some importance in SE ranking and META keyword, though it is still considered by Yahoo and some other obscure SEs, Google totally ignores the tag.

This is solely for the reason that META keywords is a thing that can be easily manipulated and Google lays much emphasis on things which can't be manipulated like one-way links from authority sites.

So my advice would be to use META tags if you feel that you've got and you'll be getting some benefit from it. And be happy !
